NCHARRP History
The North Carolina Housing Authorities Risk Retention Pool was formed by Housing Authority members for the purpose of providing a stable, available, and reasonable market by which they might transfer risk. The Pool began actively accepting participants on January 1, 1988. In the beginning the Pool offered property/casualty coverage. This coverage included: property damage, commercial general liability, automobile, directors and officers, inland marine, loss or rents, builders risk, electronic data processing and bonds.
After the Property/Casualty Section of the Pool had been in operation for a few years and was running well, the Board decided to expand into the area of workers' compensation in 1992. After continued requests from the membership, in 2004 the Pool added a Benefits Sections which includes medical, dental, vision, life and disability.
After comprehensive reviews it was decided that the Benefits Pool would complete its final year at the conclusion of 2008, closing effective December 31, 2008.
Currently NCHARRP's property/casualty section has 92 members, workers’ compensation has 72.
NCHARRP's acceptance and growth speaks for its success. It belongs to the membership, controlled by the membership, with the specific goal of supplying the needs of the membership. Being a member of NCHARRP gives the authority a waiver from the bidding process.
The goals of NCHARRP are to provide coverage to every authority in North Carolina and also provide all their insurance needs. NCHARRP is a "one stop" insurance provider.
NCHARRP is currently seeking to expand into South Carolina. Currently we insure one authority there.
